Burgundy 2006: Domaine Amiot-Servelle
Ask Christian for the family history here and he gives a wry smile. In short both he and his wife are from local vine growing families with the greatest 1er Crus, Amoureuses, Charmes and Derriere la Grange coming from her side. (The latter vineyard is not only very tiny but now so divided that it's impossible for an outsider to make any sense of it). He is a son of Pierre Amiot in Morey Saint Denis and his brothers continue to work that domaine. The style here is silky and supple, not the longest keepers but very delicious and juicy.

Big red, purple colour. A little chewy tannin, stacks of fresh, redcurrant and raspberry, lively acidity yet silky, long and balanced on the finish. Very well knit this, another grower to defy the reputation of the vintage. 2011 to 2015.

Les Charmes is a larger area of vines towards the bottom of the hill. Christian has vines in the higher part, above the road and next to his plot in Les Plantes. Deep, deep colour here and a tightly knit red that's not giving much away now. A good sign as there is plenty there and, again, the fruits are fresh and vibrant. The archetypal Chambolle that starts with a cold shoulder but ends by charming the pants off you. 2014 to 2025

A tiny vineyard 'behind the barn' that is further up the hill on the road to Morey Saint Denis. Less than three quarters of a hectare are farmed on behalf of the owner. This entitles the domaine to put their name to 3 or 4 barrels of the 12 to 15 each year. The vines are 34 years old and the berries tend to be on the small side. In style it offers much of the power and concentration of the Amoureuses, though a little more freshness lets the undoubted complexity tease the senses for a moment. 2015 to 2026.
