Burgundy 2006: Domaine Chofflet-Valdenaire
My old friend Jean Chofflet has given way to the sixth wine making generation of his family, Denis Valdenaire. I was struck by the newly appointed 1er Cru vineyards in the 1993 vintage and, with mounting confidence and more and more new oak the Clos Jus and Clos de Choué represent outstanding value. We recommend that the wine is drunk this summer, but do keep a little library stock to offer an interesting comparison in three or four years time.

The Clos de Choue is always the more structured and manly of the pair. Though this is still a wonderfully vibrant and juicy expression of Pinot there are some deep tannins and fine acids here which will soften in the short term. 2009 to 2014.

Now passed on to the next generation, the Chofflet family uphold the traditional methods; minimal temperature control and minimum filtration to achieve a rich and developed style. In exceptional vintages such as this, these Givrys seem to give so much more. Super ripe and fruit filled but still with that classic, soft herb note of Clos Jus. 2008 to 2016.
