Burgundy 2006: Nicolas Potel
Nicolas learnt his trade at his father's Domaine de la Pousse d'Or in Volnay. It took him a year or two to settle into his new life as a négociant in Nuits Saint Georges but the wines are now worth more than a passing glance. His background has not only given him the perfect training, but also a wonderful black book of growers from which he can buy the best fruit. At the moment, I favour those wines from close to his former home in Pommard, but look out for some exciting reds from the greatest vineyards of the Côtes de Nuits. As he concentrates more and more on his best wines we offer a tighter range of even higher quality.

Bourgogne Rouge 'Cuvee Gerard Potel' 2006, Nicolas Potel
£75.00 |
An exceptional blend largely from 60 year old vines on the foothills of the Cotes de Beaune. The depth, density and roundness harks back to the excellent 2005. Spicy acids with hints of vanilla and brioche. Now to 2012.

Auxey Duresses Vieilles Vignes 2006, Nicolas Potel
£105.00 |
Interesting parcel of 60 year old vines, high above Meursault that yield cooler, frisky, crushed lime aromas. Racy, mineral and with a more classic, citrus finish, this unusual appellation proves a winner in the context of the vintage. 2008 to 2011.

Volnay Vieilles Vignes 2006, Nicolas Potel
£168.00 |
Perhaps Nicolas' bench mark wine from the old vines that he knows best. Fruit is now from 10 parcels of land as there are slim pickings from the gnarled and knotted stumps. Pure, mid pale red, black with a clean, tight, red fruit nose. Mouth-watering, rich style of Volnay with obvious, floral red fruits and fine, silky tannins. Pure, natural feel and, unusually for a village wine, will cellar well. 2010 to 2017.

Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Damodes 2006, Nicolas Potel
£225.00 |
In the top corner, by Vosne Romanee, the Damodes offers a sturdy and grainy, mineral red fruit style. Forceful in red fruit, currant leaf, cranberry and loganberry, this is, in short, a many flavoured, deep and rounded wine. Always one of the more expressive Nuits and this year is no exception. 2014 to 2019.

Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2006, Nicolas Potel (6)
£240.00 |
Great value this; it's right up with the best of the Grand Crus. Deep, intense and focussed with layers and layers of fine, silky fruit. Elegant and super satisfying on the finish; a taste that last for over a minute. 2020 to 2030.

Pommard 1er Cru Pezerolles 2006, Nicolas Potel
£295.00 |
Pezerolles is in the richer soils on the Beaune side that tend towards softer, more fragrant and perhaps more elegant Pommard. Not so in 2006. Nicolas and Xavier placed this as the last 1er Cru of our latest tasting as it's become a monster full of savoury, gun flint and fat, black fruit notes. Though aggressive at first, it finishes evenly and the tannins are fairly soft. Leather jodhpurs, silken underwear! 2012 to 2020.
