Burgundy 2008: Domaine du Comte Armand
The ever youthful Benjamin Leroux has been running the estate for 10 years now. He's still as dynamic as ever and thinking of finding one or two more parcels to add to the excellent range. Fully organic since 2005 and now certified as biodynamic, Benjamin tells me he is working lower parts of the vineyard by horse and the reduced compaction is already resulting in a better soil structure. Epeneaux is, of course, one of the great reds of the Cotes de Beaune.

The Pinot Noir vines are between 28 and 77 years old and are vinified in batches according to age, and now site. Benjamin Leroux has been separating young and old vine's fruit but, since last year, vines are all old enough to make a geographical separation. The vineyard has a high and a low section. On top there is power, energy and a degree of tension and austerity but with fresher, redcurrant and pomegranate fruit. At the foot of the slope where soils are a little richer, the wine is wonderfully open, elegant and perfumed with red fruits and a hint of dark chocolate and honey on the finish. The final blend will be a little more from the lower slope so expect power, elegance and extreme complexity and persistence to come into the same glass. 2016 to 2024
