Burgundy 2008: Maison Auvigue

The Auvigue family has been working its vineyards for generations, closely following traditional Burgundian methods of winemaking. The winery is between Solutre and Charnay, west of Macon, and the grapes come from their own various family estates and a small proportion from carefully selected parcels purchased from neighbours in Pouilly Fuisse, Saint Veran and Macon Solutre. To allow each piece of land to remain true to its potential, Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue always adapt the vinification process to best suit each parcel. Most of the top wines see short aging in French oak, but the overall style is firmly terroir driven and so the wines show magnificent liquid minerality, purity and freshness.
Price Per Case (in bond)
Macon Solutre Cuvee Naturelle 2008, Maison Auvigue £110.00
Produced from a small vineyard of organically grown Chardonnay, the 2007 Macon Solutre Cuvee Naturelle is fermented in stainless steel tanks without any oak influence and shows excellent fresh acidity that frames the plump, rich lemon citrus fruits. Auvigue's characteristic elegance and finesse is present in buckets as is its signature steely minerality. Produced in tiny quantities, expect this wine to be offered on a strict allocation basis. Drink now until 2012+.
Pouilly Fuisse Cuvee Hors Classe 2008, Maison Auvigue (6) £120.00
This prestige cuvee is laced with liquid minerals, fresh soft round acidity, sweet lemon citrus concentration and excellent length. The fine vanilla oak spice is expertly integrated and this wine is made in a slightly more "modern" style from selectively purchased parcels from neighbouring estates in Pouilly Fuisse. Made in small quantities, this wine will charm you with is breadth and depth of flavour. Drink now until 2016+.
Pouilly Fuisse Vieilles Vignes 2008, Maison Auvigue (Magnum) (6) £215.00
After the 2006 vintage collected the overall "White Wine Trophy" at the International Wine Challenge Awards 2008, the 2008 vintage follows on smartly and despite ever increasing expectations, does not fail to impress. The wine is concentrated with stoney liquid minerals, fresh crisp acidity, sweet lemon and lime citrus fruit zest and a delicately creamy vanilla oak which is expertly integrated and supremely subtle. This wine looks sure to sell out before most 2008 whites even hit the shelves. Quantities strictly limited, especially in Magnum format.
