Burgundy 2008: Domaine Jean Chauvenet

Jean's cellars are just off the main road. Fork right as you go north out of town and you will be treated to what are fast becoming the best range in the village. Vineyard holdings are relatively large here but in Bousselots, Vaucrains and Perrières Jean has some of the finest 1er Cru vineyards in the Côtes de Nuits. Truly outstanding in 2006 and 2008.
Price Per Case (in bond)
Nuits Saint Georges 2008, Domaine Jean Chauvenet £240.00
Made with 50% new oak and still in casks into 2009!! There is amazing density across all of these wines. Fine and pointed nose of black fruits. Good concentration and broad on the palate, a touch of tannin and piquant acidity. Much to look forward to here. 2013 to 2019. (note that Christophe is now making 2 cuvees of the village wine. This is the better of the two.)
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Damodes 2008, Domaine Jean Chauvenet £340.00
It's always tough to choose from such a wonderful array of 1er Crus here. This is the most elegant and of the range and drinks earlier. Defined, bright, red cherry and plum. Lively, energetic and with hints of chocolate and mocha on the finish. Never aggressive, with some delicacy but a lovely touch of richness to the deep and serious finish. 2016 to 2023
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru aux Bousselots 2008, Domaine Jean Chauvenet £340.00
Wines like these are the culmination of Christophe Drag's dedication to this great domaine. Aux Bousselots, a south facing plot, immediately to the north of town, produces notably small berries giving a dense and ripe style. Indeed there is a marked depth to the colour and the nose offers a concentrated confit of black cherry. High tannins here to balance those rich, ripe fruits. This is vast; Christophe opted for a little more punching down and has double racked to allow a touch of development. Pepper, savoury and a little on the wild side, this is one for the genuine longer term. Manly but top class. 2019 to 2028.
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Perrieres 2008, Domaine Jean Chauvenet £399.00
Poorer soils with large stones are more difficult to work. In parts the top soil is a thin as 5cm! The result is an initially austere and mineral red but black fruits, cool chocolate, dried fruit and nutmeg develop on this ultimately generous wine. On the finish there are fresher, minty raspberry and orange zest notes. Super. 2018 to 2027.
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains 2008, Domaine Jean Chauvenet £450.00
An expansive, east facing vineyard at the southern end of the village where the clay is harder and the wines tend to be more solid when young. Being mean on yield, this is well known as one of the 3 greats of Nuits. There is exceptional depth of colour to this; it's almost Bordeaux-like! Enormous and rich like a Grand Cru, yet delicate and a touch floral like a great 1er Cru. Lovely combination of fineness and ripeness. 2021 to 2030. Wooden cases.
