Burgundy 2008: Domaine Jean Jacques Girard
In 1998 Jean-Jacques Girard became independent from his brother. He and his wife Agnes manage the few hectares in Savigny and Pernand Vergelesses with great care. The most striking thing to note on these wines is the concentration and firmness, without being too harsh in bitterness or tannins. Great balance, with some potential longevity, has been achieved at a very modest price.

Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru les Peuillets 2008, Domaine Jean Jacques Girard
|
£155.00 |

Peuillets derives from an old French word for young woodland. But that was in medieval times as these vines are as only old as their owner (I won't let on!). They often yield the more substantial and long keeping Savignys. Fine focussed black cherry and cassis fruit; there is amazing ripeness here that vindicates Jean Jacques' years of work in the vineyard to make this one of the best of the village. As supple hint to the palate in what is not always a supple year. Creamy finish. Lovely now! 2010 to 2014

Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru les Lavieres 2008, Domaine Jean Jacques Girard
|
£155.00 |

Jean Jacques owns a range of 1er Cru vines in Savigny. With vineyards facing all directions either side of the valley, soils different on the Beaune side and woodlands high up on the Pernand/Corton side, this is a true selection box. Les Lavieres is south facing, fairly high up on the Pernand side and one of the warmer vineyards. So the style is ripe and fleshy but with a structure that balances and will allow this to keep well for 8 years or more. It has become my 1er Cru Savigny of choice in recent years (though 2006 missed out!) as it seems so much bigger, more mouth filling and with rich, almost dried fruits. Many layers to this; delicate Pinot fruits, lushness from the oak, hints of flint and kaleidoscopic depth. Lovely. 2012 to 2016
