Burgundy 2008: Maison Roche de Bellene

There's no keeping Nicolas Potel down. Following a rift with his previous partners, who have ridiculously retained the Potel name, he has founded Maison Roche de Bellene. A while ago he bought a beautiful winery with flats and a courtyard on the circular road around Beaune. Refurbishment is in full swing and it's all being done sustainably. Whites and reds (there is a fantastic old ageing cellar - this was run as a winery by Chanson until the early eighties) are made and kept separately. Early results are, as you would expect, spectacular.
Price Per Case (in bond)
Bourgogne Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene £99.00
Attractive and pure mid purple/red in appearance. Cherry, light raspberry and pomegranate make a delicate yet delicious fruit salad in a mid palate that seems to only get stronger on the finish. As good as ever. 2010 to 2013
Volnay Vieilles Vignes 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene £199.00
Nicolas has selected just the best two of seven that he had previously worked with on this, a signature red (his family origins are in Volnay). The result is stunning; rich, tactile, expressive of the terroir, balanced and seriously serious. One of the first 2008s to mark on your card this. 2012 to 2018
Pommard les Vignots 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene £225.00
A petit Pommard that I found utterly alluring and with unusual deep colour and richness. This was a stand out wine at our en Primeur tastings. 2013 to 2016.
Puligny Montrachet 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene £275.00
Pale yellow and star bright. Spice, hints of lardon, vanilla cream and more delicate orange peel, white flowers and white nectarine. Great complexity on the nose is followed by huge power on the palate. Long and broad, this wine will give pleasure for a little time into the future. It's nearer 1er Cru than village quality. 2011 to 2015
Pommard 1er Cru les Grands Epenots 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene £295.00
I have always loved the Pommards from Nicolas. Appealing, creamy, silky smooth and supple. Soft, biscuit tannins and bright delicate acidity and with a yummy, cool finish. Notes are markedly different from many Pommards; being on the Beaune side this has lush flesh and silk texture. 2014 to 2019
Charmes Chambertin 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene (6) £325.00
Perhaps the value wine of Nicolas's Grand Crus, this exudes purity and elegance. The palate opens with a slatey, mineral twang, swiftly backed up by fine and focussed black fruits and firm, but ripe tannins. Finely tuned and with great distinction. 2016 to 2024
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Referts 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene £350.00
Pale yellow and star bright. Spice, hints of lardon, vanilla cream and more delicate orange peel, white flowers and white nectarine. Great complexity on the nose is followed by huge power on the palate. Long and broad, this wine will give pleasure for a little time into the future. It's nearer 1er Cru than village quality. 2011 to 2015
Le Chambertin 2008, Maison Roche de Bellene (6) £595.00
This is shy on the nose but wow, what complexity in the mouth. Loganberry juice, blackberry, cassis, clove, cinnamon, vanilla, slate and the list goes on, for at least a minute! For me this epitomises what great wine makers can achieve in simplicity; the ultimate quality here is the combination of power, balance and complexity maintained all the way through the finish. 2020 to 2031
