Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2005, Margaret River (6)
The Producer
Vasse Felix was the first commercial vineyard and winery in the Margaret river region of Western Australia. The Vineyard took its unusual name from an early event in the district. Vasse was a french seaman who drowned last century. Paradoxically, Felix is the latin word for fortunate or luck. Thus the name refers to a favoured place in Australia discovered by the French. The first vineyards wre planted in 1967 after extensive research by Dr Tom Cuillity who named the vineyard Vasse Felix. The bird on the label is a perigrine falcon used to deter other birds from the vineyard. Located in the south western corner of Australia, Magaret River enjoys near perfect conditions for viticulture. Today the vineyard is owned by the Holmes a Court family.
The Wine
The brief given when making the Heytesbury, in the words of Vasse Felix and Margaret River’s founding vigneron, Dr Tom Cullity, was to make the best possible wine. The wine is a tribute to the hard work and foresight gained from making wine in the Margaret River Region for 35 years at Vasse Felix - the wine that started Margaret River.
