Alpha Domus Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon 2004, Hawkes Bay
The Producer
First planted in 1991 after extensive research on the Ngatarawa plains just west of Hastings on North Island, New Zealand. The vineyard is situated on relatively infertile, free draining soils consisting of some 600 mm of silt loam overlaying metres of river gravel. This area of the Hawkes enjoys a unique climate, and lying 40km inland, the area often records summer daytime temperatures in excess of 40 degrees C. Alpha Domus vineyard also lies in a natural rain shadow and is protected from winds by ranges to the south and west. This combination of natural conditions encourages low cropping which is ideal for quality wine production. We are very pleased to have these wines on our list as we believe while New Zealand is best known for its Savignon Blancs their Claret style reds are increasingly exciting from this area.
The Wine
Voted the best Boutique winery in New Zealand a couple of years ago, the Alpha Domus winery has risen to iconic status. With a new winemaker taking over in 2006/7, they have big plans for their prestige red blends.
Our favourite is always the Merlot / Cabernet blend because it consistently over delivers for the price. Lush, moca choc spice, creamy cassis and plummy fruit and elegant, well judged oak treatment.
Single Bottle: £11.99
In a case of 12: £11.39
