Bodegas Piqueras Marius Reserva 2004, Almansa

The Producer

The Almansa region lies 100km inland from Valencia and Alicante, an area of 10,000 hectares. The soil is calcareous and the extreme climate is offset by the high altitude of many vineyards. With modern technology and new American and French casks, the Bonete family expertise ensures the production of high quality wines at most competitive prices.

The Wine

A great bargain wine, fantastic quality at this price. Almansa is in the south east of Spain, and grows a mixture of Monastrell and Cecibel (Tempranillo) to make classic Spanish reds. Almansa's very hot climate, it can hit 40 Deg C in the summer, leads to rich concentrated wines. The 2004 has good complexity on the nose and rich smokey red fruit on the palate. Aged both in barrel and in bottle, the Marius Reserva is perfect for drinking now. The 2004 does show excellent purity of fruit and wonderful freshness from the Tempranillo and is yet another step up in quality on previous vintages (if that is possible)!
