Quarles Harris 1977, Vintage Port

1977 was a momentous year. Elvis died, Red Rum won the Grand National for the 3rd time and street parties lit up the UK as royalists celebrated the Queen's silver jubilee. In the Douro, the harvest began at the end of September and it soon became apparent that the wines were very deep, richly fruited, rich in tannins and showed a great capacity for aging. The vintage was declared by all but three of Oporto's shippers. The Quarles Harris 1977 is still fullish in colour, with a plump overt nose. Decent grip and good concentration underneath. In a recent tasting of all the 1977 vintages, this wine shone in our tasting books! Its earthy smokey fruits were creamy, soft and elegant. Most importantly it exhibited wonderful freshness and a cool finish. Although still youthful and slightly tight when initially opened, this wine blossomed and was one of our stars among a line up of far more exulted names such as Fonseca and Grahams. (Nov 2007) Excellent value for money for a vintage that is now becoming increasingly expensive and scarce to buy by the bottle.
