Handford Wines

Vall Llach is located in Porrera, one of the nine villages that form the Priorat region. It was founded by partners Lluis Llach (a well known Catalan singer) and Enric Costas in the 1990 's. These are impressive wines made from a combination of 60 to 90 year old Carinena and Garnacha vines with some newly planted Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The range is made up of the entry level (but still a stunner) Embruix, The Idus and the flagship Vall Llach. A highly rated estate that’s caught the eye of most critics from Jose Penin in Spain to Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator team in the US.

The Wine

Dark but bright ruby red, this blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Merlot and Syrah (40%, 35%, 15%,and 10% each respectively) is rich and overt and shows the balance and structure required to promise excellence and elegance in the future. As the wine develops look for cherry-liqueur, blackberry and red currants together with plenty of wood, vanilla and spices. Hold this another year or two and then drink comfortably until 2010-2012.
