Niepoort Batuta 2005, Douro (6)

The Producer

Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by the enigmatic Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports they have now joined the ranks of great producers of Vintage Port. Niepoort own Quinta de Napoles on the Tedo ( a tributary of the Douro ) , and Quinta do Carril and have been at the forefront of the production of still Douro wines. Using barrels from the great french barrel maker Francois Freres Niepoort are producing delicious almost Burgundian whites and stylish fine reds as well as a vibrant rose.

The Wine

The 2005 BATUTA is the latest release of one of Portugal’s most sought after trophies, and easily the most successful of Niepoort’s 05 reds. Dirk Niepoort likes it better than his 2004. That said, this has many merits. It is a classically elegant 2005. It has surprising grip on the finish, and a certain "how to put this?" subtle richness. Yet, it is surprisingly light, and does not show the density or structure of the 2004. It is still a very fine wine and will develop into a moderately complex wine with some age. It could use some time to settle down, but it seems surprisingly approachable. Drink 2009-2020. Niepoort is one of the Douro’s iconic estates. 92/100 RP
