Rustenberg John X Merriman 2005, Stellenbosch (6)

The Producer

One of the most picturesque vineyards in the world, the Rustenburg estate lies at the base of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. With Rustenburg's declared aim being 'to be the most prestigious winery in South Africa in terms of image and quality', there can be no doubt that they had full faith in Rod Easthope, the young Australian flying winemaker who produced 1996 vintage reds. Things have since moved on and now young talented mastermind wine maker Adi Badenhorst is firmly at the helm, and sailing the HMS Rustenburg in to very exciting waters!

The Wine

A blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, the medium to dark ruby-colored, John X. Merriman sports a nose reminiscent of freshly crushed black berries and plums. This wine has a lush, broad, rich personality of sweet plums, blackberries, and cassis layered throughout this satin-textured, medium-bodied wine's character. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. 89/100 Wine Spectator 2008 - Smart Buy
