The Producer

Whatever people say about the English, their inventiveness, creativity, and bulldog spirit have never been questioned. Faced with massive competition in the world’s biggest wine importing market, a dogged dedication to quality and new winemaking methods are the only ways English wine can be competitive. England grows curious and unfamiliar grape varieties, which the climate, soil and winemakers turn into original and distinctive wines with unique tastes and aromas. In a sophisticated market already tiring of over-oaked Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, England’s Bacchus, Schönburger and Rondo may well be the new stars in the future. And it will surprise most people to learn that there are around 300 vineyards in England, with the first vines planted by the Romans. So in early August, we travelled down to Kent to see the vineyards for ourselves! While they source grapes from vineyards all over Southern England, their winemaking always focuses on the regional aspects of terroir like their Pinot Noir grown on chalk downs or Essex clays. Winemaker Owen Elias, a graduate of the English winemakers course at Plumpton, is a magician with a nose for good wine and has spent the last 10 years focusing on creating wines that are imbued with aromas and flavours characteristic of England. At Chapel Down, if you ever visit, you will find an enthusiastic team of people that are committed to producing wines that can compete with the best from the New and Old Worlds.

The Wine

Pure Pinot Noir with extra bottle ageing. You could almost think you are in the Montagne de Reims quaffing a Premier Cru Champagne! Right up there with Nytimber and Bellvue Merrit.
