Davenport Vineyards Limney "Horsmonden" Dry White East Sussex 2007

The Producer

Davenport Vineyards is slowly becoming one of the more established producers in the UK as several new plantings come on-stream over recent years. Their original vineyard was planted in 1991 in Kent, and they now have 12 acres of vines, all managed organically under UK Soil Association Certification since 2000. The winery in Sussex is one of the best equipped in England, and since 1995 Davenport Vineyards have developed a reputation based on the quality and individuality of their English wines. "Will Davenport is one of the more serious and talented winegrowers in the UK today. The winery contains some of the best facilities and equipment in the UK....one of the brighter stars in the English wine firmament." Stephen Skelton, The Wines of Britain and Ireland, 2001 "Owner and winemaker Will Davenport is probably one of the most skillful and pioneering winemakers operating in England today. Davenport is definitely an estate to watch with interest when it comes to innovation in English wines." - write-up in Winefinders English wine catalogue.

The Wine

Their flagship wine made every year from the Horsmonden grapes. Regular award winner in the UK Vineyard Association annual wine of the year competition and last year winning the top prize in the Soil Association's food awards. It is a slightly aromatic dry white that goes well with food, and even with quite spicy food. The 2007 is young and has huge concentration of flavours. It will develop over the next year to produce the fruit aromatics that the 2005 showed so well. At the moment it is a strongly flavoured wine with mineral characters on the finish and a touch of orange aromas. This wine is certified "Organic" by the Soil Association. Limited availability and highly allocated.
