Niepoort Tiara Branco 2007, Douro (6)
The Producer
Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by the enigmatic Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports they have now joined the ranks of great producers of Vintage Port. Niepoort own Quinta de Napoles on the Tedo ( a tributary of the Douro ) , and Quinta do Carril and have been at the forefront of the production of still Douro wines. Using barrels from the great french barrel maker Francois Freres Niepoort are producing delicious almost Burgundian whites and stylish fine reds as well as a vibrant rose.
The Wine
The 2007 TIARA is a blend of Codega, Rabigato, Donzelinho, Viosinho, and others from old vines. It is Niepoort’s stainless steel wine (although 10% was aged in wood, not always new oak), first produced in 2004, while the Redomas are more Burgundian in style and use more wood. It comes in at just 12.5% alcohol. This version, though, while retaining good acidity, is beautifully forward and fruity, clean and pure. It is quite delicious, with a mouth coating finish. 89/100 Wine Advocate
