Handford Wines

The Auvigue family has been working its vineyards for generations, closely following traditional Burgundian methods of winemaking. The winery is between Solutre and Charnay, west of Macon, and the grapes come from their own various family estates and a small proportion from carefully selected parcels purchased from neighbours in Pouilly Fuisse, Saint Veran and Macon Solutre. To allow each piece of land to remain true to its potential, Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue always adapt the vinification process to best suit each parcel. Most of the top wines see short aging in French oak, but the overall style is firmly terroir driven and so the wines show magnificent liquid minerality, purity and freshness.

The Wine

The 2008 Macon Solutre fermented in stainless steel tanks without any oak influence shows excellent fresh acidity that frames the plump, rich honied lemon citrus fruit concentration so typical of the vintage. Auvigue's characteristic elegance and finesse is present in buckets as is its signature steely minerality and precision. An excellent effort. Drink now to 2011.
