Graham 1997, Vintage Port
The Producer
Bought by the Symington family in 1970, Graham is said to have been fouded in 1820, following payment of an outstanding debt in pipes of port. The bulky and chewy wines are largely the product of some of the best qintas on the Douro, to the east of Tua.
The Symingtons are advocates of many modern techniques, especially autovinification, which leaves the grape treaders redundant. But there remains great passion for the ports, which remain in the premier league.
The Wine
Very rich, almost opaque black/pastille red colour. The nose is closed for now but the sign of what is to come are clear in the palate - massive concentration, mouth-fill, evenly balanced, strong, ripe and rounded. Some berry fruits, spice and liquorice flavours are lurking and even the grape acidity is concealed by the sheer power of this port. A long keeper of very high quality.
