Rutherglen Muscat Campbells, Victoria (37.5cl Bottle)

The Producer

One of the richest leads in the Rutherglen region was the Bobbie Burns, and Campbell was one of those who worked on it, finding it (as did others) elusive and fragmented. When the gold dwindled, he selected 32 hectares of tree-clad land adjacent to the lead, and called his property Bobbie Burns. He added a further 48 hectares of adjoining land in 1870, acquiring title to both parcels in that year. The fifth generation is represented by Colin's daughter Susan Campbell, who has the resplendent title of Marketing Resource Manager. It is self-evidently a business with a proud history, but has moved with the times, especially with the marketing of its richest resource, its muscats and tokays. Some years ago, the winemakers of Rutherglen decided on a voluntary, mini-appellation controlee system for their muscats, dividing them into four ascending classes: Rutherglen Muscat; Classic Rutherglen Muscat; Grand Rutherglen Muscat; and Rare Rutherglen Muscat. Campbells is one of those producers who have adopted the system for both their muscats and their tokays.

The Wine

An unctiously sweet fine wine offering from Australia's famous Muscat region. Situated northeast of Melbourne, Victoria, the Rutherglen region has built up a sweet wine tradition that is not easily matched in other new world countries. Dense and delicious, these sweet wines are Australia's answer to Oporto!
