Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2004, Domaine Joseph Matrot
The Producer
Now run by the charismatic, Thierry Matrot, this domaine is Meursault’s most significant in terms of vineyard holding and quality combined. Thierry is one of few modern growers who prefers to store and sell when the wine is near to maturity, foregoing the cash advantage. However he has released a few cases for sale ‘en primeur’.
I assure you that the red Meursault, ‘La Piece sous le Bois’ is as great as ever. It’s unusual but I cannot commend it to you highly enough.
The Wine
In the middle of the hillside and fairly middle of the road in terms of mineral austerity versus the rich, the ripe and the exotic. Indeed it often shows the most complexity in early tastings and I have written lots this time; supple, big palate, evident, chalky tannins, zingy acids, vanilla cream, honey, orange blossom, white nectarine, and a touch of grapefruit on the finish. Lovely 2011 to 2017.
Single Bottle: £36.95
In a case of 12: £35.10
