Josef Umathum Zantho Zweigelt Burgenland 2004 (6)
This is one of the great red estates of Burgenland and Austria , predominantly for the reds, but increasingly for sweet wines too. There are many dimensions to this estate and vineyards are scattered throughout the north east side of Lake Neusiedl , with different varieties planted on different terroirs. Umathum makes a wide range, and exports only a small proportion. But the signature grape variety has always been Zweigelt, though St Laurent is also favoured, and increasingly, Blaufränkisch – replanted on south-facing terraces overlooking the lake at Jois, and tracing its origins as a vineyard back to the 11 th century. The wines have a lot of personality, particularly the Zweigelt, which has a muscular and rich fruitiness, but still a strong mineral touch. Pinot Noir sees a lot of new oak when young, but ages most impressively. Indeed all the Umathum wines age very slowly. The sweet wines are unoaked, full of primary flavours and deliciously aromatic .
