Handford Wines

The small Madeira house of Barbeito was founded in 1946. It quickly established the best vineyards and cellars on the island and a range the envy of competitors. Since Ricardo de Freitas took the helm of the family in 1991 he has concentrated on recreating authentic old styles of Madeira completely naturally aged in casks by the Canteiro method, some of which are put to age in the loft of the family house.

The Wine

Dark tawny colour. One of only 1290 bottles ! Real oxidative style, almost like a top old Oloroso. With a kind of green notes of colour on the rim. Dry complex and very long with exotic nutty dried fruits. This had a little forty year old added for a little extra depth Beautifully balanced this is fantastic Madeira. Drunk at the Barbeito shop in Funchal Madeira after a good tasting with Americo the sales director.
