Handford Wines

Mendel Winery is the union of Roberto De la Mota - one of Argentin'a most repected and experienced wine makers and that of a nearly century old vineyard. The result is the objective to produce wines of great quality that express old vineyard characters as well as those of the native soils of Mendoza. The 80 year old Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are located bwtween 900-1100 meters in the Lujan de Cuyo region. This coupled with the low nutrient rocky soils and the long ripening period produces grapes of high concentration and intensity.

The Wine

This Malbec surprised me when I tasted it as it is a great exmaple of what the Malbec grape is capable of. Plums, raisins and violets appear on the nose along with a hint of spice atypical for this grape. On the palate the wine is richly expressive with aromas of plums, rasins and spice present in obvious quantity. The tannins and oaking have been controlled giving the wine body and structure without overpowering the wine. This is a premium malbec and represents the future of what this grape is capable of in Argentina.
