Mendel Wines Unus 2004, Mendoza
The Producer
Mendel Winery is the union of Roberto De la Mota - one of Argentin'a most repected and experienced wine makers and that of a nearly century old vineyard. The result is the objective to produce wines of great quality that express old vineyard characters as well as those of the native soils of Mendoza. The 80 year old Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are located bwtween 900-1100 meters in the Lujan de Cuyo region. This coupled with the low nutrient rocky soils and the long ripening period produces grapes of high concentration and intensity.
The Wine
The Unus is a premium blend of Cabernet sauvignon (30%) and Malbec (70%) from this high quality vineyard. The blend produces a deep violet wine with a nose of dark berried fruit, cassis, blackberries married with chocolate and vanilla aromas coming from its aging in new french barrels.
On the palate this is a full bodied wine plenty of structure coming from the cabernet and fat meaty round flavours coming from the malbec.
This is a serious Argentine wine and not to be drunk on its own. It would go perfectly with a nice piece of char grilled meat, steak or even better lamb.
The makers say consume from 2006 to 2020 so it will improve with time but I don’t think many of you will be able to wait that long!
Single Bottle: £25.99
