Warwick Estate Pinotage 2005, Stellenbosch

The Producer

Warwick Estate lies in a valley enclosed by the Simonsberg, Kanonkop and Klapmutskop. Originally part of a vast piece of land known as "Good Success", this eighteenth century farm belonged to Colonel Alexander Gordon who renamed his portion in honour of the Warwickshire regiment which he commanded during the Boer War. Gordon's Bay near Somerset West is named after Colonel Gordon for those of you familiar with South Africa. Like many of his compatriots, Gordon decided to stay in South Africa and so he settled at Warwick to raise livestock and grow fruit. Years later in 1964, Stan Ratcliffe bought Warwick when there wasn't a vine on the farm. With considerable foresight he began planting the precious Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which are still a major part of the production today

The Wine

Theres Pinotage and then theres Warwick Pinotage. This is a classy effort like their whole range of reds, and focuses on fruit purity rather than jammy sweetness and oak. More reminicent of a ripe vintage Cotes du Rhone than a traditional SA Pinotage. Always one of our big Thanksgiving wines that matches turkey perfectly. What Zin is to California, Pinotage is to South Africa - when its made as good as this.
