Warwick Estate Professor Black Sauvignon Blanc 2006, Stellenbosch
The Producer
Warwick Estate lies in a valley enclosed by the Simonsberg, Kanonkop and Klapmutskop. Originally part of a vast piece of land known as "Good Success", this eighteenth century farm belonged to Colonel Alexander Gordon who renamed his portion in honour of the Warwickshire regiment which he commanded during the Boer War. Gordon's Bay near Somerset West is named after Colonel Gordon for those of you familiar with South Africa. Like many of his compatriots, Gordon decided to stay in South Africa and so he settled at Warwick to raise livestock and grow fruit.
Years later in 1964, Stan Ratcliffe bought Warwick when there wasn't a vine on the farm. With considerable foresight he began planting the precious Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which are still a major part of the production today
The Wine
Super crisp fresh Sauvignon Blanc made in a similar style to the cool climate New Zealand examples. Juicy acidity but also lovely gooseberry and zesty depth of melon citrus grassy fruit with an elegant finish. Named after the peach orchard that was ripped up to make way for vineyards next to the winery, which was planted with a variety of peach cultivated by Professor Black, a friend of Professor Perold, who created the Pinotage varietyby crossing Pinto Noir and Cinsaut. The Professor Black has the highest price per case for a white wine at the Nederberg Auction in South Africa.
Single Bottle: £11.99
