Warwick Estate Three Cape Ladies 2004, Stellenbosch
The Producer
Warwick Estate lies in a valley enclosed by the Simonsberg, Kanonkop and Klapmutskop. Originally part of a vast piece of land known as "Good Success", this eighteenth century farm belonged to Colonel Alexander Gordon who renamed his portion in honour of the Warwickshire regiment which he commanded during the Boer War. Gordon's Bay near Somerset West is named after Colonel Gordon for those of you familiar with South Africa. Like many of his compatriots, Gordon decided to stay in South Africa and so he settled at Warwick to raise livestock and grow fruit.
Years later in 1964, Stan Ratcliffe bought Warwick when there wasn't a vine on the farm. With considerable foresight he began planting the precious Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which are still a major part of the production today
The Wine
A superb offering from Stellenbosch. Now an official classification, the category of Cape Blend must contain a minimum of 30% Pinotage. This combines well with the Cabernet and Merlot and has been rewarded with plenty of stars in South Africa’s John Platter Guide and 92/100 in the Wine Spectator (2000 Vintage), the second highest score for an SA red in the US. Expect this wine to go from strength to strength as Warwick discontinue their pure Cabernet and Merlot, putting the best wines in this blend!
Single Bottle: £12.99
In a case of 12: £12.34
