Quinta da Noval Tinto 2004, Douro (6)

The Producer

The very famous Quinta do Noval is almost unique in that it has not only its vines, but also its cellars in the Douro Valley (Most ‘lodges’ are in Oporto). So the ports age in barrel in a giant cellar carved into the hills below the vineyard. There are various parcels of vineyard of which the best known is Quinta do Marco. Wines are produced traditionally, in lagares and. In my experience, have a tendency to be richer and, perhaps sweeter than many. I do appreciate their commitment to Colheita ports, effectively a single barrel, vintage port.

The Wine

This red wine was made at Quinta do Noval using carefully selected grapes 100% grown on the steeply terraced vineyards of Quinta do Noval in the heart of the Douro Valley in Northern Portugal. Touriga Nacional 70%; Tinto Cão 20%; Touriga Franca 10%. Rich round red with full fire power! Rich round and elegant with excellent concentration, this is a dense wine with heaps of dark black berry and plum fruit and leathery, spicy herby notes on the finish. Finer and more refined than the baby brother Cedro do Noval, but the first premium not port red from the Noval stable. Both baby and big brother are fine Douro examples and worthy of praise.

Single Bottle: £38.95
