Raats Chenin Blanc "Reserve" 2006, Stellenbosch (6)
The Producer
Two winemaking brothers have established track records as winemakers at leading Cape wineries. Bruwer and Jasper Raats also share a passion for making quality Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc wines, believing that South Africa's proliferation of older vineyards (for Chenin) provides a unique opportunity to position the country as a New World Chenin Blanc leader. Their commitment extends to sourcing low-yielding grapes from an old Chenin Blanc vineyard, located in the Bottelary Hills on the Kuils River side of Stellenbosch. With Jasper providing input on viticultural aspects, and Bruwer taking charge of winemaking decisions, the brothers have nudged and cajoled fruit from these old vines into two uniquely different Chenin Blanc styles. Made in limited quantities, both wines reach unexpected heights of flavour. Bruwer's Cabernet Franc ranks as one of the finest produced in South Africa and is highly sought after by collectors. An exciting producer!
The Wine
This is one of Bruwer Raats' best Chenin's to date. Rich, round and incredibly seductive and luxurious. Just such a bargain at the price. From contracted vineyards over 30 years old, this wine has the weight of white Burgundy and the true character of the Loire. Wines like this just go to reconfirm why Chenin Blanc is still one of the truly noble grapes. Now under screwcap for extra freshness.
Single Bottle: £12.99
