Morgenhof Chenin Blanc 2006, Simonsberg (6)

The Producer

The illustrious Morgenhof Wine Estate is situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountains outside Stellenbosch. This area is renowned for the high quality of its grapes and the distinctive terroir is reflected in the character of exceptional wines. Owned by Mrs Cointreau-Huchon, Morgenhof Wine Estate dates back to 1692 and consists of 212 hectares of which 67 hectares are under vines, producing approximately 30 000 cases a year. The style here is French, the ambience sophisticated and the wines are matured in an octagonal barrel cellar straight out of the Medoc. This is the exciting domain of young winemaker Jacques Celliers who's polished skills now imbue the range with its signature elegance and grace. One of South Africa's top icon wineries.

The Wine

From venerable 34 year old vines, the wine is consistently one of the top produced in South Africa since its maiden 1996 vintage won the WINE Magazine Chenin Blanc Challenge. Richly complex with aromas of honey and tropical fruit and peach blossom, the current vintage has exceptional depth while retaining that all important zingy, juicy acidity that makes this wine so drinkable, on its own or with food. Having spent time with the wine maker in February 2007 during harvest time, it becomes very clear that Jacques Celliers is a very talented winemaker indeed.
