Morgenhof Sparkling Brut Reserve 2003, Stellenbosch (6)
The Producer
The style here is French, the ambience sophisticated and the wines are matured in an octagonal barrel cellar straight out of the Medoc. This is the fragrant Domain of young female winemaker Rianie Strydom, who's Italian and French-polished skills now imbue the range with its signature elegance and grace. She's partnered in the vineyards by Pieter Haasbroek, in his 4th season at the Estate, priming almost 70 hectares to ensure they're ready come harvest time. Owners Anne and Alain Cointreau-Huchon's other vinous assets include the oldest winery in Champagne, Gosset, run by her sister Beatrice and the Cognac house of Frapin, with some of the largest Premier Grand Cru Champagne vineyard holdings in Cognac. The legacy of fine wine runs deep in their blood.
The Wine
With Champagne running in the Cointreau family's blood, years of expertise at Gosset Champagne have ensured that the Morganhof Brut Reserve is one of the finest new world sparkling wines on the market and certainly the best Cap Classique available from South Africa along with High Constantia's Clos Andre. Sadly, quantities are small, but on the brighter side, the price is very attractive.
Single Bottle: £12.99
In a case of 12: £12.34
