Ian Naude Tasting - Thurs 5th Sept
'Old Vine Series' Tasting
Sit down tasting with winemaker Ian Naude
Thursday 5th September, 6.30pm to 8.30pm
We have been selling the wines of Ian Naude for many years, but it was when he launched his dedicated Old Vine Series of reds and whites that the fireworks really started. One of the most respected winemakers in South Africa, Ian is widely recognized as the father of the Cape White Blend. So it seems slightly ironic that he would find even greater fame with a range of single varietal wines. Expertly sourced old vine vineyards now make up the core of Ian's range of wines that continue to garner mass praise and high scores from wine critics globally. His Grenache has been compared to those of Chateau Rayas and his Chenin Blanc is known as the Coche-Dury of Chenin. But its probably his old vine Cinsault wines that he is most proud of.
Join us for this wonderful opportunity to hear Ian's wine making philosophy and taste an impressive selection of his highly sought after old vine wines plus a couple of new wines that are exclusive to Handford Wines.
Italian Tasting - Tues 1st Oct
Tuesday 1st October, 5pm to 8.30pm
We have a very strong selection of Italian wine at Handfords, especially Piedmont and Tuscany.
This will be a chance for you to try some of our biggest selling wines and a few other interesting wines that you might not normally buy. We will look at our biggest selling regions Tuscany and Piemonte as well as unearthing some gems from the north and south and introducing you to some lesser known Italian grape varieties.
There's such a myriad of superb wines we will undoubtedly be arguing until the very last minute about the wines on the tasting. One good thing about Italy's diversity is that there are lots of really interesting wines to try. With great difficulty we will try to distill this country, which covers 12 degrees of latitude, into 25 wines.
Small Grower Blind Champagne Tasting - Thur 31 Oct
Small Grower Blind Champagne Tasting
Stand up Tasting
Thursday 31st October, 6.30pm to 8.30pm
Blind Champagne tastings are one of our favourite tastings of the year. A chance to throw away all the marketing hype and assess the quality in the bottle. It never fails to throw up a surprise or two.
In this blind tasting we give you a chance to try a selection of a highly respected Grower Champagnes. Often family owned, these estates own the vineyard and make the wine. Grower Champagnes are increasing in popularity but get a lot less attention than the famous Grande Marques.
It should showcase why these quality driven producers are making some of the best value wines.
We will taste 9 Champagnes plus a sparkling wine. Will you be able to pick out the imposter ?
Four Decades of Duhart Milon with Richard Brazier - Wed 6th November
Four Decades of Chateau Duhart Milon 2009 to 1970 with Richard Brazier
Wed 6th November
6.30pm - 8pm
Whilst trying to find different Vertical tastings from Bordeaux I realised that we had never produced one from Chateau Lafite’s ‘younger brother’ in Pauillac. As with many Chateaux an understandable lack of investment in the 1940s and 1950s led to a real decline and it was Barons de Rothschild at Chateau Lafite that rescued Duhart Milon in 1962 and after a few years the standard dramatically rose and the results of the last few decades have been outstanding. I would imagine this is not an estate than many people have a great experience of so to rectify this.
We will be showing 2009, 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1996, 1988, 1986, 1979 and 1970.
