Chateau Julien 2016 Haut Medoc
This petit chateau red is a real work of brilliance offering up the most seductive, fleshy, fragrant blueberry scented nose with a subtle kiss of vanilla pod and mocha spice. Medium to deep garnet purple, this wine is packed with fleshy bramble berry fruits, baked plums, blueberry crumble and a dusty, dried baking spice complexity. The tannins are soft and generous, plump and inviting adding extra ballast to the long, creamy, dense length. A very impressive wine for the price. Great to see that Bordeaux can still make wines that over deliver at a specific price point. Bravo Julien! (91+/100 Greg Sherwood MW)
Mercurey Clos Rochette 2017 Monopole Domaine Faiveley
This impressive site between Mercurey and neighbouring Rully was once shared between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but the prevalence of white limestone argued for replacing the former with more Chardonnay fruit. The 2017 Mercurey Blanc Clos Rochette is showing very well indeed, wafting from the glass with scents of citrus oil, spring blossom, nutmeg and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a delicately textural attack, excellent cut and concentration and a chalky finish.
Louis Brochet Champagne 1er Cru NV
Our favourite growers champagne, family owned and committed to producing champagnes of the highest quality. With a blend dominated by Pinot Noir, Brochet's Non-Vintage Cuvee is deep golden yellow with a fine mousse. Fairly intense nose with some red fruit and slightly toasted characters. Full bodied and lengthy flavours with a smooth finish. The wine shows excellent poise and drinks beautifully after extended ageing in the Brochet’s cellar.
Chateau Tour Baladoz 2015 St Emilion Grand Cru
La Tour Baladoz, likely named for the 18th and 19th century owners, the Valados family, is a tiny but very well appointed property in terms of its vineyard holding. They sit high on the limestone plateau, above Tertre Rotboeuf and giving not only a panoramic view of the region, but also overlying an amazing limestone tunnel that wends it way to Saint Emilion, some 800 metre away! Work towards the highest quality is frantic. There are fascinating experimental vineyards that afford a good look at some ancient varieties. But it's the dominance of Merlot gives Château Tour Baladoz its dark colour and expressive nose of red fruit with an elegant touch of wood; it is a powerful wine, supple in the mouth but with a well constructed texture.
NAUDE Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2015
100% Chenin Blanc, this wine represents a blend of terroirs with the grapes coming from 35-50 year old vines in the Swartland and Durbanville. The wine spent a year in barrel and shows luxurious body along with a striking purity and strong line of acidity."Perfumed apple skins, boiled green apple bon bons, musk and waxy incense. Palate is youthful, sleek, and light on its feet. Acids are soft and rounded by extra lees contact making this wine so creamy, luxurious, and voluptuous. Very opulent and youthful but should continue to evolve nicely." (94/100 Greg Sherwood MW)
