Blended by Bartholomew Broadbent as a tribute to his late father. Michael was, of course the great auctioneer and vinous polymath that we all knew and loved. Broadbent wrote notes on over 90,000 wines and had a monthly column in Decanter magazine for 36 years, but he is best known for pioneering wine auctions, so the Auctioneer 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect tribute.
It’s a dark, dense and fruit forward Cabernet with aromas of cassis, plum, anise, and just the right amount of toasty spice and vanilla. The style is a little deliberately subdued, elegant and more along the lines of a great Bordeaux than a heavy Napa Cab. Fervent up front but with a silky soft finish that is not unlike the great man himself.
