Description

Another parcel of very old vines; these are 50+ years old. There’s a bit of debate over the value of old vines at the moment. One of the strong arguments for is that the vignerons are in tune with the vine that they have grown up with. Frederic would have seen every vintage in the life of this vineyard. It’s somewhat paradoxical that the 2021 was open, floral and generous on the nose when 2022, a well developped and more fleshy year, appears closed and with firework mineral notes to the fore. The concentration is there and the length is fantastic. It’s a dark and brooding horse set to win the Derby, though in 2028 or 2029! If this were the first wine of 2022 that you tasted you would be thinking ‘vintage of a lifetime’. 2028 to 2034

Producer Information: Domaine Michel Lafarge

In recent years, Michel Lafarge’s reds have become the most sought after in the Cotes de Beaune. He is a committed and studious man who appears to have arrived at a near perfect formula. Of his 8 hectares, only one is of 1er Cru standing, but their fruit combines delicious Pinot flavours with layers of firm mineral character and delicate vanilla from a short-ish oak ageing. There is consistent depth, complexity and perfect balance across the range.

The domaine is now run by Michel’s son Frederic. Frederic has a well earned reputation as a leading biodynamic viticulteur, keeping chickens in the Clos de Chateau des Ducs and reviving some ancient methods.
