Description
The vineyard is mid slope and at the St Aubin end of Chassagne. This is tough, stony, loamy site that faces east and a bit north. A great white of power and generosity. This year it will drink well in youth but do keep a few bottles back. Very fine. 2026 to 2032
Producer Information: Domaine Gerard Thomas
GERARD IS A KINDLY, ROBUST AND RUDDY FACED FARMER WHOSE LIFE HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO HIS VINEYARDS. HE HAS REBUILT SOME UNUSUALLY PRECARIOUS TERRACES, REPLANTED AND MAINTAINED HIS CHARDONNAY VINES WITH PRIDE.
THERE ARE TWO SAINT AUBINS ON OFFER (I NO LONGER BUY THE UNWOODED VERSION AND THE BLENDED 1ER CRU). THE FIRST IS ENDEARINGLY KNOWN AS ‘DOG’S TOOTH’ BY MANY CLIENTS. IN FACT THE STONES WHICH DEMARCATE THE LAND LOOK LIKE GIANT DOGS TEETH. THE SECOND TAKES ITS NAME FROM THE CATS THAT BASK IN THE SUN. FOR ME, LA CHATENIèRE IS ONE OF THE BEST WINES OF THE VILLAGE AND REPRESENTS VERY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY.
