Description

The domaine was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset decided to amalgamate all the vineyard holdings acquired over the years by his négociant company and create a single identity. The domaine is based at Prémeaux, just south of Nuit-St. Georges. It is run as an entirely independent concern and is named in honour of the River Vouge, which runs past the domaine’s cellars. The estate covers a myriad of villages and appellations from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin, across 37 appellations, and the domaine continues to buy vineyards when appropriate. At the heart of the domaine is the Clos Blanc, their monopole. Sitting alongside the Clos de Vougeot and surrounded by red wine vineyards, its chalky outcrop of soil is known to have produced white wine since 1110 for the monks of Cîteaux. From its inception, the entire estate quickly adopted organic practices and soon also embraced biodynamics. Unusually there hasn’t been a head winemaker here since Pierre Vincent joined Domaine Leflaive in 2016. Today the team, headed by Sylvie Poillot, make all the decisions consultatively.

The 2019 harvest started on 9th September with Volnay’s young vines and finished on 23rd September in the Hautes Côtes. The yields for Pinot Noir were low, especially in the Côte de Beaune but the Grand Crus were more generous than expected. Sylvie and the team believe very strongly in the benefits in retaining whole bunches, believing it is the best conduit to express the character of grapes grown biodynamically and to preserve the delicacy in the wine, especially in these warmer harvests. The maximum alcohol this year was 13.2%, which is remarkably low, under the circumstances.
