Description

Peter-Allan Finlayson describes the 2021 Agnes as a wine with great delicacy, elegance and a lithe light touch crystalline purity. Indeed, this wine is incredibly sleek with fabulous zesty aromatics of lemon and lime biscuits, dusty grey slate and hints of honeydew melon. On the palate, the wine is beautifully elegant and pure boasting boiled lemon bon bons candy, white peach and a subtle salty, leesy, savoury complexity on the finish. Lovely precision, light-touch intensity and concentration of flavour on the long, linear, persistent finish. An understated wine that will appeal to sophisticated drinkers. Drink on release and over 5 to 8+ years. 93+/100 Greg Sherwood MW

Producer Information: Crystallum Wines

Crystallum Wines is a boutique wine operation started in 2007 by brothers Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson, third-generation wine producers and sons of Peter Finlayson of Hamilton Russell Vineyards and Bouchard Finlayson fame, and South Africa’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay pioneer.

Crystallum is situated in the cool Walker Bay region, on South Africa’s south coast around the town of Hermanus in the Hemel en Aarde valley. They strive to find a balance between using old-world methods and traditions - trying to nurture what comes off the vines rather than manipulating the fruit to fit a predetermined outcome. All Crystallum wines now fermented by wild yeasts and with reduced use of new oak to help the bright fruit shine through. This philosophy was firmly recognised when Peter-Allan was named Tim Atkin MW’s ‘South African Winemaker of the Year’ in 2021.
