Description

The 2017 marks the 30th vintage of this now iconic wine and is made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Impressive quality delivered in a warm, challenging vintage. The aromatics are super perfumed, exotic and seductive with layers of cherry sherbet, crushed limestone, tart cassis and sour Victoria plums. The fine grained tannins are sweet and rounded supported by delicious freshness and vibrant acid brightness. Certainly no shortage of intense strawberry and black berry fruits, cherry spice, cola and subtle hints of graphite on the finish. A triumph of quality for the vintage! (97/100 Greg Sherwood MW)

Wow, there is a very impressive freshness here that defies the heat of this vintage. The 2017 Saffredi does not seem like a 2017 at all. Now celebrating its 30th birthday, Saffredi is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Thanks to the vineyard's proximity to the sea, leaving leaves on the vines and the sharp diurnal shifts of the area, the fruit was able to ripen in a balanced manner despite the hot and dry summer. The team at Fattoria le Pupille knew they would have to be ready to harvest early and lose some their yields, and they did. In the end, production was down 25%, but the result is a fresh, thick and beautiful red made with ripe fruit and dark concentration. This is a great effort from Fattoria le Pupille! (97/100 RP)

Producer Information: Fattoria Le Pupille

Elisabetta Geppetti, the powerhouse behind Fattoria Le Pupille, is a woman of exceptional energy and vision. She was only 20 years old when she first took the reins at her family’s property in Scansano. The original wine made here was Morellino di Scansano which, to this day, remains the mainstay of production. With her steadfast vision, Elisabetta enlarged the estate to the current 75 hectares and added to the range Maremma’s first Super Tuscan, the Cabernet-based Saffredi. Thanks to Elisabetta’s incredible work over the last thirty years, Maremma is now firmly on the map of wine lovers.
