Producer Information: Fonterutoli

Ser Lapo Mazzei is the author of the first known document to use the "Chianti" denomination in 1398. Since then, for 24 generations, the Mazzei family produces wine at Castello di Fonterutoli, which even after its recent expansion (into Maremma, then Sicily) still remains the beating heart of the company.

The hamlet of Fonterutoli is an old bastion of Florence only a few kilometers from Castellina in Chianti. Mazzei transformed this arid and rocky land into bountiful land which adopted diversity into it’s signature style. 117 hectares of the overall 650 hectare estate is under vine at 200-500m above sea level, it is organised into five zones and then a further 120 single parcels. The resulting wines are always well proportioned and elegant with a great food pairing ability. Secondary cultivars (such as Malvasia Nera and Merlot) olive trees, lavender and woodland with free roaming game fill out the rest of the estate and can be envisaged from the beautiful bouquets produced from their wines.
