Description

Founded in 1870, during the reign of Italy’s first King Victor Emmanuel II, Francesco Rinaldi is cemented in the history of Barolo. A traditionalist estate which gained a reputation for producing some of the most age worthy Barolo wines, the winery continues to be run by the family with Paula Rinaldi now in charge. Farming is at the extreme end of organic, the ferment occurs with indigenous yeast in ancient tini (tall oak vats) without any controls or mechanization.

Grignolino is a very rare black grape variety exclusively grown in and around the town of Asti in Italy’s Piemonte region. Though two appellations have existed for over forty years, only recently have plantings of the grape increased as consumers demand fresher styles of wine. Grignolino is like a novitiate to Nebbiolo. It is high in acid and tannin and produces lightly coloured wines. Alcohol is the main difference. The grape reaches phenolical ripeness much earlier than Nebbiolo and so final alcohol levels can be controlled.

In order to preserve the spray of cranberries and ethereal white pepper nuances, this wine sees zero oak, ageing exclusively in stainless steel until bottling in Spring. It is light, rose-tinted with a dry presence that is suddenly sparked with red plum and pink raspberry on the finish. Will work with meatier fishes if you fancy red!

Producer Information: Francesco Rinaldi

The traditionalist estate of Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is one of the greatest names in Piemonte. Located in the town of Barolo itself, the estate has a long and illustrious history in the region. It was founded in 1870, when Francesco Rinaldi inherited a vineyard and house in Barolo, inducing him to leave behind his work with the very large Mirafiore estate and set out on his own. His family at that time also had ties to the then greatest estate in the Barolo region, Barale-Rinaldi. Francesco was the cousin of Giuseppe Rinaldi, and together these two superb family wineries have marched down through time side by side, both upholding the unique, traditional style of Barolo that has also been championed by other great names in Piemonte, such as Bartolo Mascarello and Bruno Giacosa.
