Description
Saint Cosme is blessed with very special land here and there are few growers that can match this range. Grenache (around 70%) with Syrah and Mourvedre comes from the various small plots and begins to ferment before the pressing. After a light press and final ferment the wine is aged 20% in new oak, 50% in older barrels and the rest in tank. That ageing retains fineness and lift to a dense red that offers prune, fig and black cherry notes with charred vanilla notes and a pepper and spice finish. Will need a year or two in bottle to round off. 93 – 95 from Jeb Dunnock is a good score for such a wine. 2023 to 2034
Producer Information: Saint Cosme
While his family has been growing grapes for 14 generations, Louis Barruol is the first of the clan to bottle his own wines, rather than sell grapes to local negociants. Indeed, Louis has become a negociant himself, sourcing grapes and wines throughout the Rhone Valley and making an outstanding range of wines. The basic Cotes du Rhone puts most producers to shame, while the Gigondas made from his own estate fruit is always one of the top wines of the appellation.
Louis makes his wine without fining and his wines are bottled unfiltered to produce exuberant fruit and flavour as well as lots of character. His wines remain one of our star finds and judging by all the great reviews he has received we are lucky to have found them when we did.
