Description
Having worked with his brother at the exemplary Domaine Jamet, Jean-Luc went rogue a decade ago. He has significant holdings in Cote Rotie and makes some of the very best reds on the hillside. His farm is 2 kilometres west and these vines are cut into the hills of similar, schist soils. These face east (not west as at Cote Rotie) and are suited to a more vibrant style of Syrah. This is emphasised by a burgundian approach to wine making with some whole bunch ferment, new barrels and natural yeasts. The result is a concentrated and deeply coloured Syrah that stays frisky, fresh and long lived in the palate. There aren’t many reds like this! The frank and fresh flavours are best suited to a simple red meat dish, charcuterie and hard but mature cheeses.
Jean-Luc works with his wife Evelyne and son Benoit They are firm favourites of James and everyone here at Handford.
