Guillaume Nell, winemaker at Lýsa Wines, is one of SA's leading new generation of winemakers. This 100% Pinot Gris is sourced from Stellenbosch and the terroir is a South-eastern facing vineyard with gravelly sand topsoil, koffieklip and decomposed granite subsoil at an altitude of 150m. The wine was naturally fermented with no addition of yeast or nutrients and was bottled unoaked after 4 months lees contact in tank.

The wine shows a pale gold with restraint aromas of fleshy, juicy white melon, lemons, wet chalk, lanolin and gravel… hot gravel, baking on a summer's day. The wine is just off dry but beautifully balanced against racy acidity with slightly viscous mouth feel backed up by an abundance of fruit concentration and a long refreshing finish. A very good wine indeed. Drink now and over the next three years. (93/100 Greg Sherwood MW)

Winemaking Approach

Producer Information: Lysa

After 23 vintages (including Chianti Classico, Barossa Valley, Napa Valley and the Rhone Valley) Guillaume decided to pursue his dream and start Lysa Wines (Old Norse for “to bring in the light’’).

His philosophy is that great wine is the culmination of carefully managed vineyards and that wine should clearly communicate the context of the grapes. His vision is to make wines that challenge the norm. The 2019 Verdelho and wooded Chenin Blanc are his maiden releases under the Lysa brand.

His focus is not on specific varieties, but rather on promising, independent vineyards that are destined to make great wines.
