Description

6 bottle pack.

The 2017 Rubicon is a classical blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Deep purple-black in colour, it has dense, dark aromatics of violets, black currant, black plum and Black Forest gateaux with some salty black liquorice. On the mouth there are gentle waves of blackberry crumble, crème de cassis, macerated black cherries, freshly tilled earth, cigars and finely textured, powdery tannins.

While 2017 certainly stands out as another classical year of exceptional quality, the vintage will surely be remembered for its stand-out elegance and seamless palate textures. This really is another exquisite vintage with charm and poise. Plus, however enjoyable it is in its youth, the Rubicon 2017 is also built for extended ageing.

Producer Information: Meerlust

A true South African icon winery, growing fine wines on the Meerlust Estate has been part of the Myburgh family tradition for eight generations, beginning in 1756. The first owner of the property, a German immigrant named Henning Huising, recognized the beauty and potential of the farm and settled here in 1693. He named his new-found home "Meerlust", meaning "pleasure of the sea", as the manor house sits on a granite outcrop only 5 km from False Bay.

Its proximity to the sea allows its vineyards to benefit from the cooling effect of the prevailing south-east wind during the hot Cape summers, permitting a slow ripening of the grapes for a rich varietal aroma. The area experiences extremely heavy dew deposits and its annual winter rainfall measures approximately 550mm. Further moisture is derived from the mists that occur in this coastal belt during the ripening period. Temperatures are moderate around the year.

The Rubicon is their flagship Bordeaux-style red blend that has been turning heads since its first release in 1980, but they also produce an award winning Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pomerol style Merlot.
