Description

High up on the hillside, and virtually contiguous to the Murgers des Dents de Chien vineyard of Saint Aubin. We have enjoyed stunning vintages from here for all but a decade and 2020 is high in the peckng order. Super pure, with a distinctive hit of flinty minerality, a defined and natural acidity that marks it above the Saint Aubins, and that lovely, cooling soft fangerine and pomegranate that we saw on the Dents de Chiens. One of the key notes of Thomas wines is integration. All wines are fermented and aged in oak, of which one barrel in five is a new one. At no point do you taste oak in any of these great whites. Superb. 2024 to 2031

Producer Information: Domaine Gerard Thomas

GERARD IS A KINDLY, ROBUST AND RUDDY FACED FARMER WHOSE LIFE HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO HIS VINEYARDS. HE HAS REBUILT SOME UNUSUALLY PRECARIOUS TERRACES, REPLANTED AND MAINTAINED HIS CHARDONNAY VINES WITH PRIDE.

THERE ARE TWO SAINT AUBINS ON OFFER (I NO LONGER BUY THE UNWOODED VERSION AND THE BLENDED 1ER CRU). THE FIRST IS ENDEARINGLY KNOWN AS ‘DOG’S TOOTH’ BY MANY CLIENTS. IN FACT THE STONES WHICH DEMARCATE THE LAND LOOK LIKE GIANT DOGS TEETH. THE SECOND TAKES ITS NAME FROM THE CATS THAT BASK IN THE SUN. FOR ME, LA CHATENIèRE IS ONE OF THE BEST WINES OF THE VILLAGE AND REPRESENTS VERY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY.
