Description

The 2016 is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon; 17% Cabernet Franc; 12% Malbec; 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot. The aromatics are cool, perfumed and spicy showing plenty of overt violet fragrance, cedar spice, cinnamon stick, pencil box and dried mint. There is no shortage of sultry black berry fruit complexity with seductive nuances of black currant, pithy black cherry and sun raisined cranberries.

Medium bodied, the palate is wonderfully understated and elegant. An overall tendency towards elegance and classism rather than overt decadence. A thoroughly enchanting and engaging wine. (96+/100 Greg Sherwood MW)

Producer Information: Raats

Winemaking brothers Bruwer and Jasper have established a leading reputation for Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Jasper works the vines. Many are old vines on the decomposed grantic soils of Bottelary Hills. Without disagreeing with the popular view, the brothers do challenge the idea that old vines always make more exciting wines. The is best evidenced in the exceptional value Cabernet Francs that give Raats their justified status as the go to Franc producer in the Cape.
