Description

Germany's Muller-Thurgau is probably most famous for dumping Liebfraumich onto the world. But, Sebastian Fürst at Weingut Rudolf Fürst down in the Franken region wasn't made German Winemaker of the Year in 2018 for nothing. He's taken this workhorse grape and grown it on stony soils that are characterized by red sandstone and on vines that are worked intensively by hand. The final grapes were carefully harvested and manually selected. The result? A silky wine with a crystaline purity.

You are greeted with a nose of lemon pith, ripe green apple, melon and a touch of kumquat – all underpinned by a gorgeously saline wet stone. On the mouth it shows white peach, green apple, lime skin and wafts of herbal sage, all built on notes of crisp, mineral chalky limestone. A wonderfully clean and stony/steely finish and a real energy about it. Delicious!

Producer Information: Weingut Rudolf Furst

Weingut Rudolf Fürst has a long tradition. The Franconian family Fürst can document their history as winegrowers back to 1638. When Paul and Monika Fürst took over the winery in 1979, they built today’s estate buildings on the outskirts of the village.

Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) thrive in the weathered colored sandstone soils. Spätburgunder in particular has been cultivated in these iron-rich soils for centuries. The work in the vineyard focuses on low-impact methods, reduced yields, meticulous canopy management and staged selection passes. Those efforts, followed by gentle processing in the cellar and long maturation in wood, serve as a guarantor of the high quality of the wine. It's this type of commitment that earned the 2012 Schlossberg Spätburgunder special praise from the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung"as the 2014 Red Wine of the Year.
